ETHICS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Social Implications of AI

Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its Social Implications

This course will explore the philosophical implications of the development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. We will examine how AI technology is changing the way we think about intelligence, consciousness, and the nature of human existence. We will also examine the ethical and social implications of the development and use of AI.

Note: The above course description, while accurate, was generated by AI.

Session 1 — The Metaphysics and Epistemology of AI
In this session we will examine what AI is, and more importantly, what it is not. Some questions we will consider:

  • How (if at all) does artificial intelligence differ from human intelligence?

  • Is AI conscious? Sentient? Aware? Is it the kind of thing that could be?

  • What does it mean for AI to “learn” or to “have knowledge?”

  • Does AI have agency? Is it the kind of thing that could have agency?

  • Are AI systems the kind of thing that can have rights?

Session 2 — AI and Value Theory
In this session, we will examine the social and ethical implications of AI. Some questions we will consider:

  • What are some ways that AI will affect us at the individual, local, and global levels?

  • Given the potential of AI, are there certain things we should do with this technology? If so, what are they?

  • Given the potential of AI, are there certain things we should not do with this technology? If so, what are they?

  • As a society, what can we do to ensure that our legislative powers and our ability to regulate AI keep up with its development? Or is this a pipe dream? A fool’s errand? A lost cause?

Two (2) 75 minute sessions/course. Cost: $37
